Utahina Teams Tournament

This year only 6 of us made the journey up to Rotorua but it meant we were able to travel all in one vehicle (a people mover mind you) and so had a good time socialising on the way up. This year we combined with players from all over the North Island to form two teams, one in the bottom grade and one in the top grade. In previous years when entering one team we have had players having to play in a grade that's probably a bit tough for them and not really getting much of a game. So this year we were hoping all involved would have some great games, and we did!

The team in the top grade finished third out of four teams but every tie was very close and we all had some great, and at times nerve-wracking, games. The tie results are as follows:

Mairangi Bay took winning honours, successfully defending their title from last year if my memory serves me correctly. It is worth noting however that they won all their ties 5-3 so competition was extremely fierce in this grade! It is also worth noting that a certain mixed doubles combination lost 31-27 (all games were 1 set to 31) in a nail-biting game against Mairangi Bay. Had my partner and I (yes it was I!) won that game we would certainly have won the tie on countback and then the placings wouldn't have been so straightforward! Brilliant games all round.

The team in the bottom grade ended up in fourth place (yes out of four!) but also had some great games and were just unlikely that more of the 31-29 and 31-30 losses didn't go in their favour. So often they would be in a position to take the game and then just miss it, frustrating stuff but everyone still thoroughly enjoyed the close games despite the small number of actual winds. Their tie results are as follows:

Unfortunately nobody has any recollection of who the final team was that beat them but for letting all the other teams in their grade beat them they were given the "Sportsmanship Award" which consisted of a bottle of wine. Is it possible that the wine has clouded the memories of those involved? Most likely!

The dinner was fairly standard, unfortunately there has been no repeat of the banquet we were served three years ago which is still fresh in many of our minds! And due to the World Mountain Bike Champs being held in Rotorua on the same weekend our usual accommodation was all booked out and we didn't have individual spas in each unit! Breakfast on the lake was however once again a very scenic affair and we look forward to next years event!

Interclub

This year we initially entered 10 teams, a phenomenal number given that the most any other club entered was 5 teams. This reflects a boost in membership numbers which was seen at the start of the year. However, due to injuries and a lack of A grade women we were forced to withdraw a team part way through the season. Unfortunately we were back to a year where we were lacking in female interclub players meaning we were forced to enter a team of three men and one woman.

As far as a results go we were fairly consistent in finishing around the middle of the table in all three grades. The best results were a second and third placing in the C Grade and a third placing in the A Grade. The teams that topped each grade had a substantial lead over the rest of the grade.

The placings for all teams in each of the three interclub grades is shown below, no detailed points table has been given to us as yet. Our clubs teams are highlighted:

Lyn is not happy that the C Grade title has been lost by our club... she was in the winning C Grade team for three seasons in a row! Then she got too good and had to go up to the B Grade. And look what happens!

Club Champs

Once again there were some very close fought battles for the club champ titles but we had a unfortunate lack of female players interested in playing club champs meaning the scrapping of the B & C Grade women's singles, the women's doubles and the mixed doubles.

In all 37 games were played over the day with singles being played in three grades (A, B & C) while doubles combinations were constructed across all grades by the tournament organiser in the hope of some close battles. Some players were certainly feeling the effects of long and close games with breaks between sets spent sprawled on the floor!

The winner and runner-up respectively in each event are as follows:
